Senate Clears Ministerial Nominees

  • No filibusteringministerial scrn
  • Final list released
  • Screening continues

Contrary to expectation today, the Nigerian Senate has cleared all Ministerial nominees with no filibustering.

They are Mr. Kayode Fayemi, Chief Audu Ogbeh, Osagie Ehanire, Amina Mohammed, and Senator Udoma Udo Udoma among others.

First to appear was Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, a two time Senator in the 4th & 5th Senate and a nominee from Akwa Ibom State.

Udoma gave a glowing account of his engagement in both Public and Private sectors having served as the Chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission.

Senator Udoma said he has something to offer Nigerians having led a multitude of people successfully and would hit the ground running if confirmed as a minster but above all, he was motivated by President Muhammadu Buhari’s integrity.

When asked for policy prescriptions he would proffer if confirmed to move the nation forward, Udoma was quick to narrow down on policies for manufacturing with emphasis on consistency of such policies which instills confidence and stimulates Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as well as review of Nigeria’s tax policies.

He was however told to bow and go having answered questions put to him.

Next in line was Dr. Kayode Fayemi, immediate past Governor of Ekiti State who was subjected to the hot seat first by Senator Sola Adeyeye who asked the nominee to explain why he allegedly left Ekiti State with heavy debt burden to the tune of N25 Billion or thereabouts.

Dr. Kayode explained that government is a continuum having inherited about N18.5 billion debt from his predecessor, Mr. Segun Oni.

He however put a caveat that funds borrowed were used for Capital Projects; infrastructural renewal through partnership with the European Union (EU) DFID, USAID etc but never borrowed to pay salaries.

He admitted approaching the Capital market for funds but boasted of a virile Social Security Benefit for indigent and elderly people with a stipend of N5000 monthly.

He called on the Federal government to take steps towards blocking numerous porous borders to check influx of illegal immigrants which has contributed to insurgency,

Dr. Kayode Fayemi was born in February 1965, a distinguished academic and a world class media expert.

Earlier, the Senate leader Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume moved the motion to suspend relevant rules of the Senate to admit Special Advisers to the President, ministerial nominees and APC party faithful.

Meanwhile, Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki read the final list of ministerial nominees from President Muhammadu Buhari.

Prominent on the list are Hon. Khadijat Bukar Abba Ibrahim, Gen. Dan Ali rtd, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Abubakar Bawa Bwari among others.

Screening was streamed live on www. Senate.gov.ng, screening continues tomorrow.
