Rail Transport: Senate calls for positive action

Barely 24 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari lamented the state of Nigerian roads, the 8th Senate of the senate ashafa rail transportFederal Republic of Nigeria on Thursday declared that Nigerians need to see ‘change’ in their daily lives beyond the mantra in government and political circles.

This was made known by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Land Transport, Senator Olugbenga Ashafa (Lagos) who yearned for Nigerians to see a revitalisation of its railway systems.

In an exclusive interview with NASCARD, Senator Ashafa emphasised the importance of rail transport not only as an alternative to road transport but also as an avenue to save and prolong the lifespan of Nigerian bridges, trunks and roads described by President Buhari as ‘dead’.

He urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on Nigeria’s rail transport system and also enlighten the public on the National Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), a certified academic institute that offers diplomas and certificates in various transport disciplines.

When asked about what his committee would do differently in order for Nigerians to enjoy a better road transport operation, Senator Ashafa pointed out funds as a major agent of change and said that along with its parent committee on transport, the Senate Committee on Land transport would help in the consideration of budget proposals begin with the 2016 budget. He also lauded the composition Land Transport as comprising committee which included a former Honourable minister of transport (Jeremiah Useni), a former minister of the rail transport passionate FCT (Philip Aduda) and several other senators who would bring their political and business acumen and experiences to bear on the committees deliberation to ensure that its visions in the 8th senate and maximally achieved.
